Both sublimation paper and heat transfer paper move a printed design onto a substrate using heat and pressure — but the mechanism is fundamentally different, and confusing the two leads to wasted materials and poor results.
Sublimation paper works by converting dye into gas at high temperature (typically 380–400°F). That gas penetrates polyester fibers at the molecular level, becoming a permanent part of the fabric — no raised surface, no film, zero peeling after washing. Heat transfer paper, by contrast, uses an adhesive polymer layer that physically bonds on top of the substrate. You can feel the transfer on the surface. It works on both cotton and polyester, and on dark-colored fabrics where sublimation fails.
The practical rule: if you're printing on polyester or polymer-coated hard surfaces (mugs, tiles, phone cases), sublimation paper is your material. If you need to print on cotton or dark garments, heat transfer paper is the right choice.
For any printing operation beyond small-batch hobby work, roll sublimation paper is the standard — not sheets. The reason is throughput. Industrial dye-sublimation printers run roll-to-roll, and switching to sheets mid-production introduces alignment errors and downtime.
Roll widths typically span from 610mm (24") up to 1620mm (64"), covering standard textile and soft signage print widths. Jumbo rolls — common in factory settings — can run 7,000m to 15,000m per roll, minimizing changeover frequency. For a busy print shop producing sportswear or flags, that continuity directly impacts cost per meter.
A4 and A3 sheet formats still serve a purpose: proofing, short-run personalized items, and entry-level desktop sublimation setups. But anyone scaling to commercial volumes should default to roll stock from the start.
Gram weight (gsm), drying rate, transfer rate, and ink capacity are the four parameters that determine whether a paper fits your printer and application. Here's what each means in practice:
As a reference, industrial-grade roll sublimation papers like the RHT-6105 (48 gsm) are optimized for high-speed, low-ink jobs, while the RHT-6110 (100 gsm) handles heavy ink loads with maximum color density — the same roll width options (24" to 64") available across both. Matching paper grade to your printer's ink output settings is more important than brand loyalty.
Standard sublimation paper works well on flat fabrics under a flat press. But stretch fabrics — swimwear, sportswear, performance jerseys — shift during pressing, causing ghosting: a blurred double-image caused by paper movement before the dye fully transfers.
That's where sticky (tacky) sublimation paper solves a real problem. Its pressure-sensitive adhesive coating temporarily bonds the paper to the fabric during pressing, then releases cleanly without residue. For rotary calendar printing on elastic textiles, it's not optional — it's standard practice.
ECO sublimation paper uses biodegradable coating formulations and reduced-chemical processing, targeting print operations that need to meet environmental standards — particularly suppliers to European fashion brands with strict supply chain sustainability requirements.
The sublimation paper market itself reflects this direction: valued at USD 1.4 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 2.7 billion by 2035, with eco-friendly formulations identified as a primary growth driver alongside high-speed digital textile demand. Buyers sourcing at scale increasingly factor environmental credentials into vendor selection.
Before placing a bulk order for roll sublimation paper or heat transfer paper, run through these four checks:
Paper-based heat transfer film (including DTF formats) gives you coverage on substrates sublimation simply cannot handle: cotton, dark fabrics, and natural fiber blends. Where sublimation requires a white or light polyester base, heat transfer paper carries an opaque white layer that lets color read accurately on dark backgrounds.
The trade-off is durability. Sublimation prints resist cracking through 100+ wash cycles because the dye is embedded in the fiber. Heat transfer films can begin to deteriorate after 30–50 washes depending on application quality and wash temperature. For fashion items meant for heavy use, that's a meaningful difference. For promotional merchandise, event apparel, or cotton-dominant markets, heat transfer remains the more versatile choice.
Understanding where each technology excels — rather than defaulting to one for everything — is what separates efficient print operations from costly trial-and-error.
